All the Pretty Horses is nearing completion.  It has been two years in the making, what with the dreaming, the planning, the fundraising, the rehearsals.

Now it is so close that we can all taste it.  The cast includes horses Portia, Sonata, Angel, Charlie, Mandy and of course the brilliant Mustang, Amado, ridden by the equally brilliant Summer Brennan.  Riders include Lis Spoto (who also vaults) Christina Hinkle and young rider Julia. The humans are dancers Ingrid Schatz, DeAnna Pellecchia, Daniele DeVito, Nicole DeWolf, Amanda Michie, Sandy Gautier, Chandrika Carl-Jones and little horsegirls Gianna and Emmy.  Finally, there is the lovely Ryder Cooley who brings her saw playing and singing skills to the mix.

The performance is a benefit for the important work that Little Brook Farm does, including the rescue and sanctuary for abused and neglected horses that were sent for slaughter, and a second-to-none education program that reaches out to over 80 community organizations in the upstate New York area.

we are coming to Little Brook Farm!

This past weekend we were rehearsing for our performances to benefit Little Brook Farm, an equine rescue sanctuary and B.I.T.S., their wonderful educational outreach program.

For me, this project is a labor of love.  It took a beautiful turn on Saturday, when we started to work with three young girls who ride at Little Brook.  Photos of that work are up on Facebook.  I have been working with the riders, as well as with Amado, the rescued Mustang and his owner, Summer Brennan,  for the past several months.  Now we are putting the pieces together, and I am excited about the results.

We are still seeking support for the last series of rehearsals for the project.  The eight dancers all travel from a distance to participate, and the professional dancers in that group are paid for the efforts.  This has always been important to me.  Artists often give their work away, and there is a prevalent feeling that somehow that should be ok.  It isn’t.  If you can help us to cover some of those expenses as we come close to completing the project, please use the Google donate button here.  Just type in the amount you would like to donate.  Paula Josa-Jones/Performance Works is a tax exempt arts organization.   Donations over $100 will receive a pair of tickets for the benefit, and we will split your donation with Little Brook Farm.

To reserve tickets, call 518-821-5506.

Thank you!!!

flying with horses

In preparation for our performance of All the Pretty Horses at Little Brook Farm on October 6, we are having a two-day intensive rehearsal.  Today we worked with Giana and Emmy, who is 4.  It was their first experience dancing, and they both took to the air as if they were born to it.  More photos on Facebook!

on not commuting to the dance

I love this story of how dancer and choreographer  Remy Charlip discovered the secret of dancing every part of his day.  It’s in the first three minutes.  Check it out.

What I love is how he makes dancing an inevitable, inextricable, essential part of every day.  I want that.  In her blog,  Pam White asked what you would do no matter what.  My first and most real answer would be move, to dance, to play in the garden of my body – let it bloom/explode/ooze out in strange and wonderful ways in shape, gesture,  story, time and space.

Jenna Wogenrich asks us to write down what we want.  I want to always hold the spirit and the impulse for dance in my hand, my heart, my mind, so that a moment’s notice, I can take flight, I can bloom into movement, be swept up in a current of unexpected wildness.  I want to always feel like moving,  to open to what is arising in my body.  I want to do this out loud, quiet and soft, here and there, with you watching, with no one watching.  Everywhere.  All the time.

I want to dance every part of my day.  What about you?
